Narrow-bordered Five-spot Burnet

    Zygaena lonicerae

    ZygaenidaeABH 54.009 B&F 171

Needs considerable care to separate from Five-spot Burnet.  Probably the more numerous species of the two, but distinctly local and perhaps declining, in flower-rich fields and meadows, usually with good quantities of Red Clover and/or Meadow Vetchling.  Commonest from the Mendips northwards, and also in the remaining flower-rich meadows around Shapwick.  Absent from Exmoor and the Quantocks, and from intensively-farmed areas.

    Adult Verification Grade: 3
