Narrow-bordered Five-spot Burnet

Needs considerable care to separate
from Five-spot Burnet.&nbsp; Probably the more
numerous species of the two, but distinctly local and perhaps declining, in
flower-rich fields and meadows, usually with good quantities of Red Clover
and/or Meadow Vetchling.&nbsp; Commonest from
the Mendips northwards, and also in the remaining flower-rich meadows around
Shapwick.&nbsp; Absent from Exmoor and the
Quantocks, and from intensively-farmed areas.

A day-flying species of
calcareous grassland, probably in decline.&nbsp;
Most recent records are from Walton Common near Clevedon, though also at
the remote and inaccessible Long Knoll in the far east of the county.&nbsp; No recent records from the Mendips, and not
seen at its traditional stronghold there, Dolebury Warren, since 2008.&nbsp; Needs care to distinguish it from other forester species.

Six-Spot Burnet

Widespread but local in
flower-rich grasslands, common where it occurs, and occasionally abundant on
high-quality calcareous grassland, especially in the Poldens and from the
Mendips northwards.&nbsp; Absent from inland
Exmoor and very scarce in intensively-farmed landscapes.
