Plain Elm Pigmy

A leaf-miner on elm and by far the scarcest of the three Stigmella species using this plant, though still not exactly rare.&nbsp; It is scattered in distribution across the county, with clusters of records around Orchard Wood/Thurlbear south of Taunton, around Hinkley Point (not yet mapped) and in the Porlock area.&nbsp; It is widely if diffusely recorded around Frome and Radstock, where there are many elm-rich hedgerows.

Narrow-barred Pigmy

A miner of roses, both wild species and garden cultivars.&nbsp; It is difficult to record, the adults requiring dissection and the leaf-mines separable only with difficulty from the much commoner<i> S. anomalella</i>.&nbsp; It is clear that it occurs within the county and is rarer than <i>S. anomalella</i>, but it is difficult to interpret the records further.

Barred Elm Pigmy

A leaf-miner on elm, occurring on hedgerow elms as well as trees, and therefore has escaped the worst effects of Dutch Elm Disease.&nbsp; Care needs to be taken distinguishing larva or mine from the somewhat commoner S. lemniscella, which also mines elm - in S. ulmivora, the larva is green, not yellow, and exits the mine on the underside of the leaf, not the upperside.&nbsp; The moth is reasonably common and well-distributed in the east of the county, and more scattered elsewhere, though this may reflect under-recording.
