Stigmella ulmivora

    Barred Elm Dot

    NepticulidaeABH 4.018 B&F 80

A leaf-miner on elm, occurring on hedgerow elms as well as trees, and therefore has escaped the worst effects of Dutch Elm Disease.  Care needs to be taken distinguishing larva or mine from the somewhat commoner S. lemniscella, which also mines elm - in S. ulmivora, the larva is green, not yellow, and exits the mine on the underside of the leaf, not the upperside.  The moth is reasonably common and well-distributed in the east of the county, and more scattered elsewhere, though this may reflect under-recording.

    Mine Verification Grade: L
