Stigmella salicis

    Sallow Pigmy

    NepticulidaeABH 4.035 B&F 68

British specimens of Stigmella salicis are currently understood to relate to two separate, as yet undescribed, species, referred to as cluster 1 and cluster 6.  The mines, on sallow, can be distinguished by the placement of the egg, on the underside of the leaf for cluster 1 and on the upperside for cluster 6.  Both species have been recorded right across the county, from near sea level on the Levels to some of the highest land in Somerset on the Exmoor moorlands.  When recording this species, please indicate on which side of the leaf the egg was placed; the record will then be referrable to the correct species once they have been formally described.
