Metzneria aestivella
Carline Seedhead Moth
GelechiidaeABH 35.055 B&F 725The larvae of this moth feed in the seed-heads of carline thistle, a specialist of short-turf calcareous grassland. It is rarely recorded in Somerset - about once a decade - but it appears to be one of those species that deliberate searching of its habitat might show to be more common than is currently known. For this species, this is done by collecting the seed-heads in the autumn and waiting for the adults to emerge the following year. The Mendip scarp and rocky coastal places would be among the places to look.
