Burdock Neb

Commoner in south-east England, there are few Somerset records of this species.&nbsp; Like other <i>Metzneria</i> species, it is probably easiest to find via targeted searching - in this case, collecting the seed-heads of burdocks in the autumn and waiting for the adults to emerge the following year.

Heather Neb

The larvae of this moth feed on heather, and it is closely associated with moorland and heath habitats.&nbsp; There are few records from Somerset, but it is likely to be under-recorded, as its upland, moorland sites are not often surveyed, and it does not appear to be strongly attracted to light.

Carline Neb

The larvae of this moth feed in the seed-heads of carline thistle, a specialist of short-turf calcareous grassland.&nbsp; It is rarely recorded in Somerset - about once a decade - but it appears to be one of those species that deliberate searching of its habitat might show to be more common than is currently known.&nbsp; For this species, this is done by collecting the seed-heads in the autumn and waiting for the adults to emerge the following year.&nbsp; The Mendip scarp and rocky coastal places would be among the places to look.
