Pale Oak Beauty

Restricted largely to south-east England and East Anglia, this species has always been rare in the county. It is a moth of broadleaved woodland and scrub but sometimes may also be found in gardens and parks. Larvae feed on Oak, Birch and other trees. Adults sometimes rest on tree trunks by day. In the county it has been recorded irregularly in small numbers at scattered locations. Care is required to distinguish it from Great Oak Beauty and Willow Beauty.

Dotted Carpet

Inhabits woodland and scrub with abundant lichen growth, especially large ancient woodlands.&nbsp; Its British population is restricted largely to the south-west, Wales and Scotland. Because of its habitat requirements, most county records come from Exmoor and the Quantocks.

Great Oak Beauty

A species of large, old, Oak woodlands, restricted largely to southern and south-eastern England. Always rare and local in the county, most records have come from the Exmoor area.&nbsp; There are relatively recent records from the Quantocks, near Weston-super-Mare and near Wells, and a 1919 one from Cogley Wood near Bruton, in an area with plenty of suitable habitat. It roosts on Oak tree trunks and branches&nbsp; by day and comes to light. Target trapping in suitable habitat may produce more records.
