Great Oak Beauty

    Hypomecis roboraria

    GeometridaeABH 70.267 B&F 1943

A species of large, old, Oak woodlands, restricted largely to southern and south-eastern England. Always rare and local in the county, most records have come from the Exmoor area.  There are relatively recent records from the Quantocks, near Weston-super-Mare and near Wells, and a 1919 one from Cogley Wood near Bruton, in an area with plenty of suitable habitat. It roosts on Oak tree trunks and branches  by day and comes to light. Target trapping in suitable habitat may produce more records.
