Purple-bordered Gold

Former resident, now very likely extinct.&nbsp; A specimen dated 24 June 1915 in the H. W. Mapleton-Bree collection with a locality of 'Turf Moor' (= Shapwick Heath/Ashcott area).&nbsp; Turner (1955) - "Very rare, but it still probably occurs on the Turf Moors. Taunton, Stoke-sub-Hamdon (V.C.H.), scarce and local; Shapwick (V.C.H), scarce (C. J. Perrens); Ashcott (G. B. Coney).

Small Elephant Hawk-moth

A fairly widespread and common resident, but nowhere near as frequently encountered as its larger cousin, and some of the gaps in its distribution (between Midsomer Norton, Shepton Mallet and Frome, for instance) may well be genuine.

A rare migrant, unknown in the county before the present century.&nbsp; Five records: Martock (2006), Cothelstone Hill (2008), Crowcombe (2009), Walton Common (2011) and Cleeve Park near Minehead (2017).
