Scarce Bordered Straw

An almost annual immigrant from Africa. Sometimes larvae are brought in on vegetables and flowers. Large influxes occurred in 1996, 2003, and 2006 (when more than 11,700 were recorded nationally). Turner (1955) recorded it as an occasional migrant to the county, listing records from Clevedon, Taunton and Weston-super-Mare. Since then it has occurred irregularly in small numbers, though 163 were recorded during the 2006 influx.

Bordered Straw

Immigrant species from southern Europe and North Africa that, nationally, occurs in most years in varying numbers.&nbsp; Significant influxes occurred in 1996, 2006 and 2015. In the county, Turner (1955) recorded it as&nbsp; a frequent immigrant. At the time of the last major influx in 2015, 88 were recorded in the county, a record total.

Eastern Bordered Straw

A rare immigrant from the Mediterranean and Canary Islands, first recorded in Britain in 1958. There is a handful of county records. It needs to be distinguished with care from the pale form of Scarce Bordered Straw.&nbsp;
