Plain Fanner

Common but local, occasionally in substantial numbers.&nbsp; It is found in upland south and west
Somerset, and from the Mendips northwards, with a large gap in distribution in
the centre of the county.&nbsp; Associated
with field wood-rush <i>Luzula campestris</i>,
a species of short-turf, usually dry grasslands.

Reed Fanner

A wetland specialist, surprisingly scarce in the county
considering the availability of suitable habitat in the centre of the
county.&nbsp; It occurs in the
Shapwick/Westhay area, although certainly not as frequently as might be expected;
the only other sites with regular records are around Berrow and Blagdon
Lake.&nbsp; Scarce in VC5, though a record
from Dunster could reflect a colony in the coastal marshes there.

Speckled Fanner

A species of wet grasslands, associated with rushes.&nbsp; Most widely distributed in the south and
west, becoming more local in the north and east of the county.&nbsp; This moth can be present in substantial
numbers – sometimes several hundreds – where it occurs.&nbsp; Although it comes to light, it is more
frequently recorded by day, and usually in larger numbers.
