Yarrow Pug

Nationally scarce resident and suspected immigrant, first recorded in the UK in Kent in 1933, and in the county, in 1992, since when there has been a very small number of records. It is primarily a moth of open coastal habitats such as sand-dunes and shingle beaches, but may also occur on road verges and rough grassland. The foodplant is Yarrow, on whose flowers and seed heads the larva feeds. identification needs to be taken with care, so that Pauper, Plain, Pimpinel and Grey Pugs can be eliminated.

One of our commoner pugs, occurring throughout the county and coming frequently to garden lights.

Campanula Pug

Two subspecies, denotata feeding on Campanula spp. and Jasione Pug jasioneata feeding on Sheep's Bit Jasione montana.&nbsp; Jasione Pug was found at Watchet in 1909 and rediscovered in 2020 at Hurlstone Point (both larvae and adults; larvae found there again in 2021).&nbsp; The moth has also been reported from Berrow Dunes in 1981, ST36 (Weston-super-Mare area) in 1982 and ST25 (Berrow/Brean Down area) in 1995.&nbsp; These have not been assigned to either subspecies and it seems highly unlikely that these populations persist.
