common, though variable in numbers from one year to the next; possibly absent
from inland Exmoor.

Widespread and common, though probably under-recorded as it flies in early spring, especially March.&nbsp; Those attracted to light will be males; the females have greatly reduced wings and do not fly.&nbsp; The larvae are polyphagous on the foliage of various deciduous trees.

Mottled Umber

An extremely common, but under-recorded, moth of late autumn with small numbers flying into January.&nbsp; Only males come to light; the females have only rudimentary wings and do not fly.&nbsp; Larvae are often found on oak, but have also been recorded from sallow and elm here.
