Common Birch Bell

Common and relatively widespread,
albeit constrained somewhat by the distribution of its foodplant, birch;
probably under-recorded in the upland west of the county.&nbsp; Probably the most frequently recorded of the
various Epinotia species that feed on birch.&nbsp; The vast majority of the records are of
adults to light, but this species can readily be found as a larva, the
spring/early summer generation of adults feeding in catkins in winter/early
spring, and the late summer generation in leaf-rolls in early summer.

Black-brindled Bell

Scarce and local, but with
multiple records from some sites.&nbsp;
Associated with blackthorn Prunus spinosa, a common and
widespread shrub, and potentially more widely distributed than the map
suggests.&nbsp; Most records are from the
Blackdowns.

Willow Tortrix

Seems to have been fairly widely
distributed, going by the records in the Victoria County History (1906) and
Turner (1955). The only subsequent records have been from West Luccombe (1998),
Berrow (1998) and Harridge Wood (2001).&nbsp;
Its disappearance is hard to understand, as the foodplants are sallows
and willows Salix spp. – common plants within the county.
