Red Chestnut

A widespread and common moth wherever large areas of semi-natural, acidic grassland remain - chiefly upland south and west Somerset and central Mendip, also locally in the Gordano valley, the east Somerset oak woods, around Shapwick Heath and Great Breach Wood in the Poldens.&nbsp; Possibly under-recorded, since it flies early in the year.

Ingrailed Clay

Occurring throughout the county, though being commonest in areas retaining significant semi-natural habitat.&nbsp; Numbers fluctuate from year to year but the moth appears to be in decline.&nbsp; This is a variable species, both in its coloration and in the strength of its markings.

Small Square-spot

Very common and widespread throughout the county, and often one of the commonest species at light.&nbsp; Double-brooded here, flying in June and again in August/September.
