Dark Chestnut

Widespread across the county in low numbers, and scarcer than the confusion species, Chestnut <i>Conistra vaccinii</i>.&nbsp; The late-and-early flight period means that it is probably under-recorded.

Lunar Underwing

Widespread and very common, sometimes in considerable numbers at light and often the commonest autumn moth.&nbsp; Very few records from inland Exmoor, probably reflecting a lack of recording at the right time here.&nbsp; The adults can be tricky to separate from the very similar Beaded Chestnut, not least because both species are variably coloured.

The Chestnut

Widespread and fairly common across the county, perhaps under-recorded as its flight time falls outside the traditional light-trapping period - the adult moths emerge in autumn, hibernate as adults, and then fly again in early spring.&nbsp; Variable in coloration and the strength of its markings, with those adults that have overwintered often being fairly worn.
