Figure of Eight

This moth has declined
considerably nationally, and Somerset is now something of a stronghold for
it.&nbsp; Here too it seems to have lost
ground, no longer being recorded from the Poldens around Street or west
Somerset between Bridgwater and Watchet, both areas where it once appears to
have been frequent.&nbsp; Most recent records
seem to be from lowland south Somerset and the coast between Clevedon and
Weston-super-Mare.

The Four-spotted

A nationally scarce species that used to be widespread in southern and south-west England but is now very local and much declined. Turner (1955) considered it to be very scarce and local, with 19th century records from&nbsp; Blue Anchor, Rock Hill and Aller. Modern records have come irregularly from scattered localities.&nbsp; The species favours hot, well-drained, open, sites. Immigrants or vagrants may account for some records.

This moth is widespread across
the county, occurring in gardens but being more numerous in good quality
semi-natural habitat.&nbsp; Still a common
moth, but seems to be less numerous than it once was.
