Dusky-lemon Sallow

This species,&nbsp; strongly associated with elms, has suffered a severe population decrease, most likely as a result of Dutch elm disease. Turner (1955) considered it to be scarce and local in the county, so it has probably never been widespread. It needs broad-leaved woodland, hedgerows and parkland with Wych or English Elms large enough to flower abundantly.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Pink-barred Sallow

Widespread though rarely common across the county, seemingly occurring wherever sallows can be found, including the peatlands of the central Levels, post-industrial sites in the east Mendips and on open moorland on central Exmoor.&nbsp; A moth whose young larvae feed internally within sallow catkins and which it is often easier to find by collecting the catkins and rearing the larvae.

The Sallow

Still widespread across the county, but numbers appear to be in decline, which matches the national picture.&nbsp; The moth seems to be fairly frequently met with in some areas (around Frome, for example) but absent from others nearby (Shepton Mallet, Midsomer Norton).&nbsp; The moth is variable, both in the shade of yellow that forms the ground colour and in the strength and extent of the pink markings.
