The Sprawler

    Asteroscopus sphinx

    NoctuidaeABH 73.065 B&F 2227

A moth that flies very late in the autumn, and is under-recorded as a result, only low numbers being reported most years.  Although its foodplants are said to be various deciduous trees, it has a pattern of distribution in Somerset very reminiscent of some species whose larvae feed on thorn bushes, such as Small Eggar and the Brown Hairstreak butterfly – lowland southern Somerset from the Poldens southwards, with an outpost around Frome.

    Adult Verification Grade: 1
