The Sprawler

A moth that flies very late in
the autumn, and is under-recorded as a result, only low numbers being reported
most years.&nbsp; Although its foodplants are
said to be various deciduous trees, it has a pattern of distribution in
Somerset very reminiscent of some species whose larvae feed on thorn bushes,
such as Small Eggar and the Brown Hairstreak butterfly – lowland southern
Somerset from the Poldens southwards, with an outpost around Frome.

Separable only with difficulty
from the commoner Copper Underwing, both as an adult and as a larva.&nbsp; Undoubtedly under-recorded, the distribution
map may not reflect the full picture, but it appears fairly widespread if
local, though conspicuously absent from the Levels.

Mouse Moth

A species that has declined
considerably – almost all instances where numbers recorded were more than two predate 2000.&nbsp; It has disappeared from
many areas of the county, especially along the coast north from Bridgwater and
in the Mendips, though still fairly frequently encountered where it does occur.
