The Sycamore

A rarity in the county before
1990, when it established itself around Yeovil, in line with a national
increase in range.&nbsp; The moth has now
spread across the whole county, perhaps excepting inland Exmoor, but has become
markedly less frequently recorded since around 2006.

Dark Dagger

The adults require genital
examination to be distinguished for certain from the much commoner Grey Dagger,
and because of this the moth is probably under-reported.&nbsp; The larvae can be distinguished more easily,
but are seldom found in Somerset.&nbsp;
Geographically restricted, absent from large areas of eastern and
western Somerset.

Grey Dagger

Widespread and common across the
county.&nbsp; Under-recorded because the
adults cannot be separated from the much rarer Dark Dagger without examination
of the genitalia.&nbsp; The larvae are distinctive
and fairly frequently observed, feeding on rosaceous trees and shrubs - apples, hawthorn, wild and cultivated roses, etc.
